Why this is happening

Why am I being asked to verify myself in the first place?

In July of 2026 AUSTRAC started requiring certain industries to make sure they know exactly who their customers are. AUSTRAC is Australia’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) regulator.

This isn’t up to each business, so you can’t avoid it by going somewhere else. The services listed here now must verify their customers.

Your information

Where does all my information go?

We work with accredited identity verification provider VerifiMe. The scans of your licence or passport go to a real person on the VerifiMe team to confirm your details match. The images are then stored securely.

Your VerifiOnce ID doesn’t store a copy of this document or access to it, just your key verified details (name, date of birth, and address) along with which type you used (licence or passport) and its expiration date.

So for example, if you need to prove who you are to a real estate agent, a lawyer, a conveyancer, and an accountant you don’t need to share your documents with each of them if they are in the VerifiOnce network. You just share the original documents once and everyone else gets the proof you are who you say you are.

Who’s behind it

What’s the difference between VerifiMe and VerifiOnce?

VerifiOnce is a joint venture between two Australian identity companies: accredited identity verification provider VerifiMe and verifiable credential specialists VO. VerifiMe manages identity checks and VO manages issuing your VerifiOnce ID.

What exactly is a VerifiOnce ID?

It’s a digital ID that proves who you are to members of the VerifiOnce network. It is technically a “verifiable credential” which is a specific type of digital identity that is cryptographically secure (i.e. protected by super complicated maths).

Where do I store my VerifiOnce ID?

Many people use the Microsoft Authenticator app to receive codes to log in to platforms like LinkedIn. What you might not realise is there is a second tab at the bottom of the app, “Verified IDs”, and this is where your VerifiOnce ID will be stored. It’s free to download on the app store.
